Overview of Raiding Most RuneScape skills involve interacting with specific game elements to obtain experience points, and in some cases, a tangible product of the skill (such as logs, fish, or damage done to a monster). Dungeoneering is completely different. It is designed around the concept of raidingin fact, some players think Raiding would have been a better name for the skill. Raiding is the general term used to refer to a style of gameplay that involves going into a dungeon or other venue, exploring it, and dealing with various challenges within it, with the ultimate goal of confronting a difficult boss monster. Raids are usually conducted by teams of players, who work together to solve puzzles, find keys to locked doors, and collect resources as they search for the room where the boss is located. The boss is a particularly difficult monster that usually requires special techniques and knowledge to defeat. Once the boss is killed, the raid is over, and the participants obtain a reward for their efforts. Sponsored links help make RuneScoop possible; RuneScoop members don't see them. It is also very similar to setting up a trip to kill any difficult monster in the rest of RuneScape; for example, getting a team together to fight the Dagannoth Kings or the God Wars Dungeon bosses is raiding. But there are a few important twists that Jagex has implemented in Dungeoneering that make it quite different from boss hunting in RuneScape, and possibly in other games as well. Dungeoneering brings with it the first skill training environment that is entirely instanced, which means that when you enter a dungeon, it is created for your team, and not shared by anyone else. There are other areas that are instanced in RuneScape, such as player-owned houses and farming patches, and some quest areas, but Dungeoneering is entirely based on instanceswhile you do a raid you wont see anyone other than possibly your teammates. One big difference between Dungeoneering and boss hunting in other areas of the game, is that the new skill is trained entirely in a special dungeon called Daemonheim. This dungeon is completely segregated from the rest of the game: you cannot bring any items from the outside world into the dungeon, nor can any items within it be brought out. You start the raid with no equipment or items aside from a selection of starting supplies and gear that the game provides, and a small number of special items that are bound to your character. This has a big impact on how raiding works in Dungeoneering. Since you start with very little, a big percentage of the time needed for a raid is spent equipping yourself and your teammates, and collecting resources like food and runes. Only when this process is done can you fight the boss and have a good chance of success. Messing up during resource collection can make it impossible to kill the boss. Here are the general steps that are undertaken as part of a Dungeoneering raid:
If youre new to Dungeoneering, those steps are probably a bit confusing. Dont worry, though, as the subsequent pages in this section will explain many concepts that are still new to you, and Dungeoneering Skill Mechanics goes over these steps in detail.
