To'Kash the Bloodchiller (Floors 9-11)

The last of the “Frozen” bosses, To’Kash the Bloodchiller is encountered only in the deepest of that theme’s levels: 9, 10 and 11. He is in some ways the opposite of Plane-freezer Lakhrahnaz: where the floating eye dude is annoying as heck to fight but doesn’t hit particularly hard, To’Kash keeps things simple while dealing out tremendous amounts of damage.

General Description

To’Kash the Bloodchiller is a large blue demon, looking somewhat like a smurf version of K’ril Tsutsaroth. There is some speculation about gameplay reasons for these resemblances, but if you’ve ever seen K’ril, just color him blue and you’ve got To’Kash. (Har'Lakk the Riftsplitter also looks the same, but purple!)

To’Kash uses all three primary attack types, with his magic attack being arguably the most powerful. His attacks seem to largely ignore protection prayers, though unlike his “big brother” Har’Lakk, he doesn’t drain prayer if you use one. He has only one special attack, which is similar to the ice spells in Ancient Magicks; it can freeze players in place and do large amounts of damage. Otherwise, To’Kash is a straight-forward, tough monster fight, with none of the fancy tricks some other bosses employ.

Offensive Characteristics and Behavior

As mentioned earlier, To’Kash the Bloodchiller is a rather “no nonsense” boss. You’re not going to have to deal with mazes or falling rocks or rotating protection prayers here, just a big blue meanie who dishes out damage and dishes it out aplenty.

To’Kash appears to have attacks using all three combat styles. His magic attacks seem to be the most effective, and will hit hard even when wearing pretty decent leather armor (though that is still recommended). To’Kash is one of the few bosses that will actively close to melee range despite having non-melee attacks.

To’Kash’s special attack is called “Deep Freeze”, as he’ll freely remind you. Before doing it, he’ll call out “Sleep now, in the bitter cold...”, and then a second later scream “DEEP FREEZE!” At this, he engulfs players in a solid cube of ice. The player will then be unable to attack until the ice is broken.

If you are fighting solo, To’Kash will immediately break the ice himself using a melee attack. This ensures that you won’t be stuck in a frozen state for a long period of time, but it also means you will take potentially three large hits in a short duration: freeze damage, more from breaking the ice, and possibly still more from his regular attack. Since destroying the ice is tied only to the melee attack, he’ll only do this on one player in teams, and that player can then free the others from the ice.

Defensive Characteristics and Behavior

Sponsored links help make RuneScoop possible; RuneScoop members don't see them. See here for more information about ads.

To’Kash the Bloodchiller doesn’t have any particularly significant immunities; he just has a lot of life points and pretty high defence overall. He is definitely weak to stab and crush attacks, and appears to be somewhat weak to slash attacks as well.

It’s worth noting that since he is a demon, there are many rumors that like other demons, To’Kash is weak to magic attacks. This has not been my experience. Note also the description in his examine text: he’s a magical demon. Well, yeah, all demons are magical I suppose, but not all demons have that in their examine text, and not all use magic attacks themselves! Further evidence is that he drops magical gloves. You’ll also take huge amounts of damage if you try fighting him in magic robes, so I don’t recommend doing so.

To’Kash takes moderate damage from ranging, but due to the low damage of that combat style in Daemonheim, it too is not recommended here.

To’Kash is immune to poison, like most bosses.

Recommended Preparation and Strategies for Solo Players

This is a pretty straight-forward fight; you just have to expect that you will take a lot of damage, especially if the boss is of a high level. The best way to reduce the damage is to use lots of armor, and keep your magic defence high. I recommend leather armor in the body position and metal armor in other slots to provide a good balance of defence against To’Kash’s varied attacks without letting magic defence get too low. Equip a good melee weapon on whichever attack style has the best bonuses, and just have at him.

There’s not really any point using protection prayers on this guy. Instead, I recommend using Piety or Turmoil to speed up kills.

A combat familiar will help take down some of To’Kash’s high life points total; I usually use a bloodrager (melee familiar) on him. An alternative is to employ a beast of burden to carry extra food, which is sometimes needed. A magic familiar (stormbringer) was less effective.

Be sure to eat liberally when he uses his special attack, which can be devastating.

Dropping a gatestone in the starting room is a good insurance policy against dying. You can also use this to effectively “replace” a beast of burden, allowing you to use a combat familiar instead.

Recommended Preparation and Strategies for Teams

I haven’t fought this particular boss with a team yet. My understanding is that the main way it differs from solo is that after the freeze attack goes off, To’Kash will only free one player at first (by meleeing him). Frozen players will have a “Free” option on them, and so the one who is already freed should take a little time and go around to his/her teammates and let them out of the ice.

Larger teams also usually mean higher level bosses, so be sure you have lots of food.

Drops

To’Kash the Bloodchiller gives a satisfying shriek of exasperation when you finally kill him. He drops mainly magic gloves, from tier 1 (salve gloves) to tier 11 (celestial gloves). Because of the very small number of items that players are allowed to bind, these are rarely kept.

The demon may also leave behind part of the “mysterious chronicle” journal (Chronicles of Bilrach). Look for the pages on the platform near where you exit the level.
